Yellowknife, Diamond Capital of North America
A centre of gold, zinc, lead and silver mining since the early 20th century, the city of Yellowknife on the north shore of Great Slave Lake is now the home of North America's first diamond mining industry.

Since diamonds were discovered in the Yellowknife area in the early 1990's, some of the largest diamond mining companies in the world have set up shop in the Northwest Territories' capital city. Millions of carats of diamonds have already been produced, and millions of dollars of exploration and extraction dollars have poured into the region.

The diamond boom has fueled interest not only in diamonds, but also in the vast untapped wealth of the region's many other mineral resources.
